Experience -
General
Self-employed engineer since
1978. Have worked in the planning, design and construction phases of a
wide variety of projects. Examples include development of hydroelectric
power plants, design of products made from renewable materials and permit
coordinator for projects requiring federal licensing and state water quality
and historic certification. Shorter term assignments have included structural
analysis of steel and timber frames for bridges and buildings, lightweight
design of wooden boat hulls and masts and design of concrete retaining
walls.
Experience -
Specific
Engineer of record for 8 hydroelectric
projects, responsible for layout of plant and civil works and selection
of hydraulic turbines and mechanical drive assemblies. Work included structural
analysis of steel support frames and reinforced concrete design of building
elements to national AISC and ACI code requirements. Did mechanical design
of shafts and power transfer devices to ASME codes, in consideration of
fatigue and other long life design standards. Selected bearings, gearboxes,
sprockets, pulleys and belting to industry standards. Computed hydraulic
capacities of penstocks, weirs, canals, tailraces and spillways.
On all projects, performed cash flow analysis that included revenue projections
for differing turbine selection, annual operational costs, debt service
and internal rates of return on equity.
Owners representative for FERC and state inspections.
Own and operate a 280 kW fully automated hydroelectric plant with automatic
trash rack cleaner.
Designed and built computer
control panels for automating operations at hydroelectric plants and industrial
processing concerns. Components included Programmable Logic Controllers,
analog input transducers, utility safety relays and numerous operator
devices. All systems can be remotely sensed and dispatched. Wrote program
instructions in ladder logic.
Supplier of PLC control panels
for Hydro Turbine Systems Inc., the North and South American Representative
of Ossberger Turbine.
Principal author of 6 successful
FERC License applications.
Prepared plans and supervised
subsequent construction for two privately owned dams. One utilized a timber
frame spillway in an earth embankment dam, the other was a concrete gravity
dam on bedrock foundation. Wrote emergency action plans.
Designed an energy absorbing packing material made from recycled newsprint
which incorporated a thin shelled structural element with a high crushing
strength. Was issued U.S. Patent No. 5,151,312. This new packaging medium
seeks to replace styrofoam "packing peanuts".
Woods Hole Oceanographic
Institute Woods Hole, MA 1967/86
Co-op student in the Applied Oceanography Department
Assisted with proposals for the design of surface and subsurface buoys
and their mooring systems for deep ocean current measuring experiments.
